Android Masters 2016 Finals

Android Masters, our collegiate inter-school Android app development challenge open to all universities and colleges across the Philippines, is now on its second year.

We received a total of 193 app entries from 45 schools across the Philippines. We have selected five finalists each per category (games and productivity/utility) who will be presenting their apps on November 19, 2016 at Natividad Fajardo Auditorium in De La Salle University Manila.

GDG Campus Roadshow: UE-Caloocan

GDG Philippines, in cooperation with UE-Caloocan's League of Information Technology Students, conducted a GDG Campus Roadshow at Multimedia Room 3A, Tan Yan Keee Building on August 5, 2016.



Juvar Abrera, GDG Philippines Creative Manager, introduced GDG Philippines to the attendees. Jomar Tigcal, GDG Philippines Community Manager, shares about various Google Developer Technologies that the students can use. Afterwards, there was a short break.

Android Masters 2016

Ignite the Maker in You!

Registration is now officially open for the most awaited Android Masters 2016. Android Masters is a collegiate inter-school Android app development challenge. It is open to all universities and colleges across the Philippines. The main objective of the program is to encourage students to develop their creative app ideas and publish it to Google Play Store.

Android For Beginners Study Jams



Google Developers Groups Study Jams is a free series of global, community-run, in-person study groups. Last year's Study Jams focused on the Android Fundamentals Udacity Course. Check out the video summary below:



The second Study Jams series is presented in partnership with Udacity and will follow their Android Beginners curriculum. If you are interested in the Android for Beginners Study Jams, join the live Hangout on Air on February 5 (7-8:30 AM, Philippine Time).

This year, GDG Philippines will be partnering with schools/collleges/universities for the Study Jams. If you are a teacher/professor/instructor and you are interested for a Study Jams in your school, please send us an email at gdgphilippines@gmail.com (with the Subject "Study Jams"). If you are already a developer and you are interested in the Study Jams:
What will participants in the Study Jams get? Aside from mentoring from facilitators, they will also get completion certificates, schwags, discounts to the Android Nanodegree, and more if they will be able to present their final projects.

Android Dev Summit Extended



The inaugural Android Dev Summit was held on November 23-24 in Mountain View, California. Android Dev Summit was an event for Android developers to learn from technical sessions and network with the Android team. GDG Philippines will be organizing an Android Dev Summit Extended event on December 12, 2015 (08:00 AM to 05:00 PM). We will be watching the keynote and other videos from the Android Dev Summit. There will be short talks and hands-on codelabs afterwards. Bring your computers and Android devices. We will also be bringing a few phones (on Marshmallow) and smartwatches for the workshop and to test your apps.

Android Masters Finals

We held the finals of Android Masters on October 23, 2015 at PLDT Innnolab. Congratulations to the winners of this year's Android Masters!

Our winner for the Games Category is Space Voyage from Team B, De La Salle University Dasmariñas (Games Category).



The Productivity/Utility Category winner was Crime Chase from JaguarTech, University of the Cordilleras.

Android Marshmallow Workshop

Android 6.0 Marshmallow has already started rolling out to devices. Have you updated your apps for it? We are a conducting a workshop on October 21 to help you run and test your apps on Android Marshallow. We're bringing some devices running on Android Marshmallow. Please bring your machines (with Android Studio or your IDE and your app/code that you will test).

The Android Marshmallow Workshop will be held at Bitspace Makati (6/F PDCP Bank Centre, Rufino cor. Leviste St., Salcedo Village, Makati City) on October 21 (7:00 to 9:00 in the evening)

GDG DevFest Philippines 2015

We held our GDG DevFest Philippines on October 16-17, 2015.

On the first day which was focused on Android & VR, there were hands-on workshops on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Android Basics, Firebase, Material Design, and Google Cardboard.


The second day of was focused on Web. Participants joined hands-on workshops on Polymer, Firebase, Material Design Lite, HTML5 Game Development. There was also a Gemma Kit workshop on Day 2.

Android Masters Preliminary Judging

Last night was the preliminary judging for Android Masters held at PLDT Innolab. Android Masters is a collegiate inter-school Android app development challenge.

The judges for the Productivity/Utility Category were:
  • Darth Vidar, Mobile Client Software Development Manager, Voyager Innovations, Inc.
  • Ely Apao, UX Manager, OLX Philippines
  • Mike Pua, Software Engineer, Orange & Bronze Software Labs Inc.
The judges for the Game Category were:
  • Luna Cruz, Creative Director and Co-founder, Altitude Games
  • Paul Pajo, Developer Evangelist, SMART Communications
  • Philip Cheang, Co-founder and Creative Director, By Implication
And the finalists are...



The five finalists for the Game category are Healing Touch from Asia Pacific College, Kuvio from University of Cordilleras, Silang Revolt from Asia Pacific College, Space Voyage LITE from De La Salle University Dasmariñas, and SYNC from De La Salle University Dasmariñas.



The five finalists for the Utility Productivity Category are Crime Chase from University of Cordilleras, ShareZone from De La Salle University-Manila, StimuBrain from University of Cordilleras, Universal Presentation Remote Controller (UPRC) from PHINMA - University of Pangasinan, and XYZbeta from Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

Android Fundamentals Study Jams

GDG Philippines is organizing a seven-week Android Fundamentals Study Jams on February-March 2015. This is part of the Google Developers Study Jams, free series of global, community-run, in-person study groups. The first jam session is presented in partnership with Udacity and will follow their Android Fundamentals curriculum. This series will be led by certified Google Developer Group facilitators.

For the GDG Philippines Android Study Jams, there will be a total of seven Saturday sessions. The first six sessions will be for the six lessons of the course (one lesson per week). Each session, we will have a short discussion of the lesson for the week (questions, challenges, etc) and participants can work on their individual projects. (For each week's sessions, participants should have already finished the lessons for the week.) The seventh session will be for the presentation of final projects.

Android Fundamentals Study Jam: Pre-Event Survey

GDG Philippines is organizing a seven-week Android Fundamentals Study Jams on February-March 2015. This is part of the Google Developers Study Jams, free series of global, community-run, in-person study groups. The first jam session is presented in partnership with Udacity and will follow their Android Fundamentals curriculum. This series will be led by certified Google Developer Group facilitators. In the Android Fundamentals Study Jam, there will be a total of seven sessions (6 sessions for the 6 lessons and one for final projects sharing). For each week's sessions, participants should have already finished the lessons for the week. Each session, we will have a short discussion of the materials for the week followed by discussions around the lessons (questions, challenges, etc). After that, participants will be working on their individual projects.

Event Updates

GDG Philippines has been quite busy the past few days. We had a map up of the Department of Health (September 25), GDG Campus Roadshows in Asia Pacific College (September 27) and UP Diliman (October 4), and a Google Cloud Platform Meetup (October 2) with Melina Lee, Head of Google Cloud Platform Southeast Asia.

We still a lot of events in the next few days. Our next big event is GDG DevFest Philippines 2014, which will be on October 24, 2014. DevFests are community-organized events that provides the opportunity for developers to learn about Google technologies and developer products. Registration for GDG DevFest Philippines 2014 will be opened in the next few hours.

GDGPH-GSA Campus Roadshow: DLSU

GDG Philippines went to De La Salle University for the GDG-GSA Campus Roadshow on August 16, 2014. We organized two workshops (Google App Engine and Android) in cooperation with the DLSU Google Student Ambassador (GSA) Kimberly Yu.

GDG Campus Roadshow: NU



GDG Philippines went to National University for our next GDG Campus Roadshow on August 9, 2014. In the morning, we had talks about GDG Philippines, Google Chrome, Google Apps, and Motivational/IT Career. We also had lightning talks of the topics for the afternoon workshops.

Android Wear Workshop

GDG Philippines organized our first Android Wear Workshop on August 2, 2014 in De La Salle University. Most of the attendees of the event came from provinces outside Manila (Antipolo, Rizal and Angeles, Pampanga).



We introduced Android Wear and demonstrated the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live. After that, the participants went on to do the workshop.

GDGPH-GSA Campus Roadshow: Ateneo

GDG Philippines went to Ateneo de Manila University last July 26 for the GDG Campus Roadshow workshop organized with Cristine Chen, one of the Ateneo Google Student Ambassadors.



In the morning, we had the Android Workshop while in the afternoon, we had the Google App Engine Workshop. The workshops started with Wayne Manuel, GDG Philippines community manager, introducing what GDG Philippines is, and Cristine Chen, talking about the Google Student Ambassador program.

The Android workshop was facilitated by GDG Philippines community manager Jomar Tigcal. He started with a talk about the basics, followed by a hands-on session. After that, the participants started working on their apps. Three participants were able to present apps.

In the afternoon, Wayne and Cristine introduced GDG and GSA respectively. Joshua Guevarra and Christine Balili, new GDGPH community managers, facilitated the App Engine workshop. They talked about the basics, followed by a hands-on session, and another mini-contest. After that, the participants started working on their apps and present them.

Post-Google I/O 2014 Meetup

After returning from Google I/O and our short travel to the US, we organized a Post-Google I/O meetup on July 7. The resource speakers were Wayne Manuel and me. It was held at the Coins.ph office in Centerpoint Building, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The event was attended by more than 22 participants; some of them have joined the Google I/O 2014 Extended Manila.

It was a very informal meetup. We talked about the updates and announcements from I/O. We also demonstrated the Android Wear smart watches (LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live). The participants also played with the Cardboard.

Women Techmakers: Manila

GDG Philippines is organizing a Women Techmakers: Manila event on March 8. The goal of the event is to empower women to pursue their dreams and build tools that will change the world.
