GDGPH @ 6
GDG Philippines turned 6 (on November 19) and +Eiji Kitamura, Chrome Developer Advocate ,was in town so we organized Chrome Dev and GDGPH Anniversary GeekUp last November 29, 2013.
We started the meetup with a video from +Van Riper and +Adriana Cerundolo from the Google Developer Relations Team in Mountain View.
The meetup was held at Globe Corporate Showroom. After Eiji's talk about Chrome Dev Tools, +Jomar Tigcal presented the history and future of GDG Philippines. +Anne Michelle Santos, Developer Relations Manager of Globe Labs, also gave a talk about their newly launched APIs. Gino Tria +Gino Tria of +Collabspot presented their entry to the Google Cloud Developer Challenge.

GCDC Workshop Wednesdays
Google recently launched the Google Cloud Developer Challenge 2013. Google Cloud Developer Challenge (GCDC) is a "contest designed to motivate and reward entrants who develop applications that are based on Google's Cloud Platform that are original and relevant to the region in which they live".
Two of the winners last year are from the Philippines: Collabspot Notetaker and Events KIT. The deadline for the first round submissions is on November 21. Submission will be opened on October 22.
To prepare those who would like to join the competition, GDG Philippines is organizing a series of workshops called GCDC Workshop Wednesdays at (6:00-9:00 PM) at Globe Corporate Showroom (Ground Floor, Valero Telepark, # 111, Valero Street, Makati City) [Map]
Below are the schedule so far:
- October 2: Overview of GCDC (TBA) and Google App Engine (Edge Dalmacio, Senior Software Engineer at Orange & Bronze, co-founder of Haybol.ph)
- October 9: Usability/Accessibility (Elymar Apao, Product Manager and Co-founder, UsabilityPhilippines.com and Mark Lacsamana, UI Engineer, Sulit.com.ph)

It's DevFest season once again! GDG Philippines is organizing GDG DevFest Philippines 2013 on September 17 at Alphaland Southgate Tower. What is a DevFest? DevFests are community-organized events that provides the opportunity for developers to learn about Google technologies and other developer products. GDGPH: Apps Promotion and Monetization Meetup
In the Philippines, hackathons are happening left and right. Filipino developers have produced a good number of application for both web and mobile across the different platforms available. However, the biggest concern is that most of these developers don't get the traffic that they serve and don't earn from the application they have work so hard to develop.
With this concern in mind, +GDG Philippines and +GBG Makati organized the Apps Promotion and Monetization Meetup last night (July 25, 2013) at +Commune in Makati City. Out of the 44 developers that have signed up, we have confirmed only 20. These 20 developers were picked because they either have an app idea or they already have an app out there.
After serving dinner to the participants (talk about the really delicious Chicken adobo!), the meetup started with +Rosario Juan, a social media expert, owner of +Commune, and Community Manager of +GBG Makati, discussed about tips & tricks on how the developers could promote their application. Ros' presentation is available through this link.
These was followed by a talk by Howard Dy Go of Mochibits, a game development company. Howard shared with the participants the realities of apps monetization and how monetization should rule their development. His slides are available here.
There was also an open forum after Howard's presentation when developers asked their questions to the speakers and when the other participants shared their thoughts, as well.

GDGPH: GBG-GDG Philippine Transit App Challenge Bootcamp
Last July 13, four bootcamp for the Philippine Transit App Challenge were organized by the different Google Developer Group and Google Business Group across the Philippines. There was a bootcamp in Cagayan de Oro City (organized by +GDG Cagayan de Oro and +GBG Cagayan de Oro), Cebu City (organized by +GDG Cebu) and Bacolod City (organized by +GDG Bacolod and +GBG Bacolod).
In Manila, +GDG Philippines together with +GBG Quezon City, +GBG Makati, +GBG San Juan and +GBG Pasig organized the GBG-GDG Philippine Transit App Challenge Bootcamp in the Orange and Bronze Software Labs, Inc. office in Makati City. There were 30 attendees to the event with one team sure of joining the PTAC already.
The event started at around 10:00 AM with Ms. Patricia Mariano from Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) discussing the objective of the challenge as well as the available public data from DOTC. Her presentation is available through this link.
After the session of Ms. Mariano, +Pol Faustino from Orange and Bronze discussed about code management using Git. The users learned the basic of Git as well as the best practices on how to better manage their codes during the contest period. His presentation is available through this link.
This was followed by a session by Camille Zapata, a freelance user interface and user experience expert, on quality user interfaces. One of the evaluation criteria of the challenge was quality interface, thus the attendees of the bootcamp learned what it means to have a quality UI. Her presentation is available through this link.
During lunch, the participants used the time to ask their questions to the speakers.
After lunch, +Edge Dalmacio, co-founder of Haybol.ph, discussed and demonstrated the power of Google App Engine. He showed how to deploy applications in GAE and discussed the pricing model.
The next topic is Google Maps with +Lorenzo Dee as speaker. Enzo is the co-founder of Haybol.ph together with Edge. He showed the different html and Javascript code necessary to show direction from Point A to Point B and shared their application Haybol.ph which uses both GAE and Google Maps. The last topic for the day is about tips and tricks on how one could promote their application. One of the evaluation criteria for the app challenge is public voting, thus, we invited social media guru and GBG Makati Community Manager +Rosario Juan to discuss with the developers the different ways they could promote their app.

The New Google Maps Meet-up
Last July 12, 2013, Google Developer Group - Philippines with SmartDevNet organized the New Google Maps Meet-up in Smart Jump Experience Center.
The meet-up started with GDG Community Manager +Jomar Tigcal giving an overview about what the community is, what GDG does, and what are the past and upcoming events of +GDG Philippines. Most of the 40 participants were students and it was their first time to attend a community organized event.
This overview was followed by GDG Community Manager and Geo-Advocate +Wayne Manuel. He discussed the New Google Maps. Wayne was using the huge touch screen television/monitor in Smart Jump Experience Center to show the participants the new Google Maps. He also shared the different ways the Maps API can be used depending on the need of the app or site.
Also, during the meet-up, +Carlson Orozco presented his application called bandarito.ph which uses Google Maps and Google Maps API. The app is a Philippine location-based classified ads.

Google I/O 2013 Extended Manila
GDG Philippines organized Google I/O 2013 Extended Manila at Center Stage Family KTV & Resto Bar (Jupiter Street, Makati City) from 8:00 PM of May 15 to 03:00 AM of May 16, 2013.
+Jomar Tigcal, +Celine Marie Barrozo, and +Wayne Manuel, the organizers of the event gave introductory talks. Jennifer Cho, developer relations manager of Tapjoy talked about monetizing apps while representatives from Smart and Globe also gave some talks. The show-and-tell began afterwards. The following apps were presented: Tripid (Michael Ngo Dee), Whack a Bunny Game (Tony Martinez), Portable Student Record Sheet (Victor Avila), e-Leksyon 2013 (Trina Florencio), Tudlo (Vince Loremia), and RideIn (Rai Escarez). We also had a few minute hangout with +Anne Olvido, who is in San Francisco for Google I/O. After the show-and-tell, we started watching the keynote.

GDG Baguio and PSITE organize Android and Google Maps API v3 Workshop
To help equip and update students with android and Google technology, the Google Developer Group (GDG) Baguio +GDG Baguio in partnership with the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE) conducted a seminar-workshop on android programming and Google Maps API v3 at the University of Baguio on February 9, 2013.
+Marcial Jr. Pua, Software Engineer from Orange and Bronze Labs discussed the Basics of Android Development; he encouraged participants to build task applications that are beneficial to the modern technology and will serve as a tool for improvement. Meanwhile, GDG Baguio community manager +Reymart Canuel introduced the Google Maps API, a web service that lets you render and customize Google maps into your website.

Hack for Fun
On February 9-10, GDG Philippines is organizing a different kind of hackathon. Hack for Fun is the first hackathon of GDG Philippines for the year 2013! Join us as we hack fun apps and win special prizes. All you need to do is use any Google Technology and combine it with another API or platform. More than twenty attendees participated in the event. They produced 7 apps. The winning apps are <3 by Alron Jan F. Lam, Lordd Michael N. Lazaro and Richmond Ivann C. Liclican; Half-eaten Food by Bryan Zarzuela and Nicole Antonette del Rosario (Second), and Yatta! by Ino Gamalindo (Third). Prizes include Android plushies or teddy bear, gift certificates, Android USB and Globe Tattoo sticks. We also gave special awards.

First Meetups of GDG CDO and GDG Halsema
Last Saturday (January 26), two of the newest GDGs (Google Developers Group) in the Philippines, GDG CDO and GDG Halsema had their first meetups.
GDG Cagayan de Oro had their first meetup from two to six in the evening at Dynasty Court Hotel, Cagayan de Oro, Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Around 86 participants attended the meet up. For photos and other details, check the Google+ events page.
GDG Halsema had their first meetup from eight to twelve in the morning. Twenty six attendees joined the meetup at at Mountain Province State Polytechnic College. For photos, please check the Google+ events page.

GDG Cebu To Stage First 2013 Meetup
GDG Cebu is thankful with the overwhelming support that it has received from its supporters, sponsors and members.
As an opening salvo for the new year 2013, Cebuano GDGers will open the year with a Karaoke Night that will unveil future plans and events of the community.
